About Me
Kristen Barber, Ph.D., has 15 years experience as a researcher, writer, and professor. She has also served as a tenured department chair and a journal editor, twice. As an Editor of the major international and interdisciplinary journal, Men and Masculinities, she oversaw hundreds of paper submissions and developed a public lecture on “Academic Journal Publishing 101” delivered to college graduate students and faculty.
Kristen also served as the Culture section editor for Contexts, an academic magazine that publishes scholarly work for the educated lay audience.
Her areas of expertise are in Sociology and Gender Studies, with a focus on the study of service work, consumption, representation, and norm violation. She developed a secondary area in disaster studies.
Kristen has served in leadership positions for the American Sociological Association and developed a national and international reputation that has lead her to work as an area expert for media outlets in the U.S., Canada, and France. She has appeared in articles published in outlets including HuffPost, The New York Times, The Globe and Mail and Cosmopolitan, as well as on NPR’s Marketplace and Scandales (Louie Radio).
In addition to her current publications, she is currently writing a book to support academics who are interested in promoting their work.
Kristen lives with her family, dog, and six chickens in an old home she is constantly—but lovingly—patching and painting.
